Back to the Basics – As a new couponer, how did I decide what to buy?

When I started, how did I decide WHAT TO BUY?

1. The first rule of thumb was that since I didn’t know how much the average price of items was between stores, I only bought something if I could get it for free, or if it was a larger item, for less than 50 cents. This way I was sure that I was not paying more than I should.

2. I only did one store at a time until I mastered that store. I started with Rite Aid (since these are straight forward with rebates). Then I moved on to CVS. I do Walgreens if they have a great deal, but Walgreens if definitely for the more advanced couponers because there are a lot of ways that you can end up getting trapped with their program. So, I would not recommend this one until you have mastered the other stores. Also, while I use coupons at the grocery stores for my week to week shopping, I typically do my stock-ups only on Triple Coupon Weekends, or blow-out sales.

Free Birthday Items List

When I had my birthday in March, I decided to look around at different restaurants to save money on dinner by joining their birthday clubs, e-mail lists etc. I wanted some treats, but I did not want to spend any money. I spent a couple of days looking around and there were tons of great deals. I was able to snag a lot more free food than I could have possibly eaten. Also, many of the coupons did not have to be redeemed on my birthday, but lasted a week or 2 after my birthday, so really you can get free food for a while around your birthday. Sign your spouse up too for even more free food. I thought I would share some of them with you. Many of the deals involve signing up in a club and getting e-mails. So, use the e-mail account that you use to request free samples and coupons so you won’t clog your “real” e-mail. I still check my freebie account every day though because I am constantly getting coupons, free sample offers and great deals e-mailed to me.

I thought this one was a fitting freebie, and I’m sure my budget saving sis will be kicking herself for not getting this freebie before her vacation :). Basically, the way this works is that Disney is running a special over the next year where if you volunteer a day at an approved charity, then you’ll receive a one day pass to either Disney World or Disney Land.
