Homeschool Freebies and Tips

  1. If you homeschool, there is a great budget saving website, homeschool freebie of the day. If you haven’t checked it out, you may want to. I found out about this a long while ago through one of my homeschool groups. Every weekday they post a new freebie that you can download. There have been books, audiobooks etc. on the site. I have gotten some really great things that we have really enjoyed as a family. You can sign up for an e-mail and they will e-mail you each Monday with what will be posted that week. Their downloads are available for one day only, so make sure that you go to their site on the day you want to download something.
  2. Also, I have used ambleside curriculum for some aspects of my daughter’s education. This is a classical education that is free. The curriculum starts with pre-k, but I started using it for my daughter when I found it in the third grade. It is based on 36 weeks and uses literature and classics to teach all the subjects. My daughter loves to read and so this is the perfect curriculum for her. I do supplement with other curriculum as well.
  3. When I first started homeschooling, I bought tons of used curriculum and had to figure out what works best for us as a family. I was able to sell much of that curriculum to other families at a used curriculum sale. Now that I know what curriculum to buy when I go to the used curriculum sales, I bring my list with the price of the items if I purchased them new to ensure that I am only getting what I need and paying a fair price for the items.
  4. I have participated in used curriculum sales where the sellers were able to shop early. This was a huge help as I was able to find the curriculum I needed at the lowest price. I was actually able to get apologia science books for only $3 each. (Those of you that use that curriculum know what a great price that is!)

Where to get organic wheat/food in bulk

wheat berries

One of our readers asked us where we get our wheat berries in bulk, and I thought more than one of you might be interested, so I thought we’d do a post on it.

One of the first places you should look is a website called Local Harvest. This is a great resource because it connects you with local farmers in your area who you can try to buy directly from. We have found that this has been a huge budget saver for us. We have even found a local grain mill here in North Carolina that will sell us their surplus grain if they have it. Unfortunately, they’ve stopped selling directly except to their current customers, but where there is one, there is always the potential for more.

If you cannot find a local supplier of bulk organic foods, you can join several co-ops. The following is a list of bulk suppliers we’ve used at different times. We’ve enjoyed the benefits of all of them, and you can see if any would meet your family’s needs. Just remember that if you buy in bulk, you have shipping that you will need to pay, so make sure that you factor that in to your cost as well to decide if it is a good deal for you or not. Here’s the list, several of these you join a co-op to and they ship to the co-op and you can pick up your order:

Breadbeckers

Wheat Montana

Dutch Valley Foods

Walton Feed

Another website that I would highly recommend for its articles and information on organic, healthy eating is the Weston A. Price Foundation – just know that there’s hours worth of material here, so prepare yourself if you get caught up in it, you could be there for a while :).
