Canned Cinnamon Apples in Light Syrup Recipe

These apples smell so good and are so delicious.  I love making apple recipes this time of year.  It feels like Christmas when I am cooking these. My daughter and I loved making them. We ate some that afternoon and canned the rest to use throughout the year.

Canning Cinnamon Apples

10.5 cups water
4.5 cups sugar
¼ cup cinnamon
1 bushel of apples

Peel, core and slice the apples. You can add lemon juice if you want to keep the color. Combine the water and sugar in a stock pot. Bring water to a boil for 1 minute. Turn off the water. Add the cinnamon and apples and stir. Leave the apples in the water for about 5 minutes. Then can the apples and syrup according to the Ball Canning Book. These are great as a side dish when you are in a hurry with dinner.

    Approximately how many apples are in a bushel? What kind of apples do you recommend using?

      You want to use a firm apple. The number of apples varies based on their size, but it is as many as fit in a bushel box. Usually about 125 medium sized apples.

  8. Those apples do look tasty! I love the idea of using them as a side dish – never thought of that. They would probably be good in a pie if you were rushed for time.

    Barb, I have used them for pies in a pinch, but I usually can apple pie filling as well & use that. The apples are cut finer, and the sauce is thicker in the filling. (-:

      I have given them as gifts before. (-: Barb – I usually get about 19 quarts out of it. As far as the printing, I need to come up with something for that. Right now, I copy and paste to word and then print, but I do need a printer friendly version. I will ask some of my blogging buddies about that. Thanks for mentioning that, I had not even thought of it! I hope that you enjoy them!

  17. I love cinnamon apples! What a great idea to bottle them. Does the syrup need to be thickened before serving or do you just serve straight from the jar?

      I usually heat the apples and serve with the syrup the way that it is. You can add a couple teaspoons of flour if you want to use it in an apple pie instead of just as cinnamon apples.
