Scripture Sunday

My friend, Kathy, is always encouraging me to memorize scripture. She has challenged me to memorize several chapters of scripture. I do think it is so important. It is great when a situation comes up during the day and you are wondering what to do, and God brings to mind a scripture that helps me know what to do.

Having my children memorize scripture is very important to me as well. I think it is so much easier to memorize when you are young. My eldest daughter can easily memorize 40 scriptures a week while I might struggle to memorize 5. She also helps my younger daughter learn scripture. Each night before they go to bed, they recite scriptures together with motions they have come up with. It is so precious to watch. Scriptures that I memorized as a child still come to my mind.

If you aren’t currently memorizing scripture, I would strongly encourage you to. It is something that no one can ever take away from you, and that will always be with you.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 ESV “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. (5) You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (6) And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. (7) You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. (8) You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. (9) You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Scripture memory is so important! I have not been as diligent as I should be as of late, and it’s definitely something I want to get back on track with.

    • I have gotten out of the habit as well. I was careful to keep up over the holidays, but then slacked up after New Years. I am planning on starting back up this week. It is hard to stay diligent even though I know how important it is.

I have never actually tried to memorize scripture (although I have just by reading it)…but then again my parents never really took us to church, etc. as children.
