This is my first attempt at a VLOG. The videos are a bit shaky, but still you can learn from them. I am so excited about these. Although, I must say, that the really odd expressions on my frozen face are a little odd. I hope that many of you are able to build raised garden beds as a result. Raised garden beds are low maintenance gardens. They rarely get weeds, and you are able to grow a lot of food per square foot. I helped my friend Kathy build two 4×4 raised garden beds today. I hope that this video is helpful. Plus, it should show you how easy they are to make. If two women who aren’t skilled woodworkers can make these, they have to be easy right! Plus I’m pregnant, and was still able to make them with no problem! So watch the videos, and go make your own raised garden beds. They will save you so much money in the long run. Plus, you have to love FREE, fresh, organic produce from these raised beds. It is a one time investment that will yield results for years! I actually broke this down into 9 different video segments, because this is my first attempt, and I have no idea how to put them all together. (-: I hope that you guys enjoy this!! I would love to hear any other tips for raised garden beds that you guys might have!

Thanks for this it is so timely as we have been trying to decided where to attempt a garden. We are definitely going with the raised beds this year as it eliminates all the problems in our decision. I do have one question, do you have a suggestion for purchasing soil. In NC as you know clay is AWFUL!
You can buy bags at Lowes or Home Depot. The soil is still not full of nutrients in general though. However, you can build up the nutrients in the soil each year by crunching up leaves and making some compost for your garden. Hope that helps! Rene

Wonderful! I love gardening!! I am hoping that I can do as much this year since I will be VERY pregnant when most of it is coming in. How great that you can go ahead and start. You can probably grow things almost year round. Here in NC, I can grow things about 9 months out of the year. Thanks for saying the videos were good! I was nervous about them.
If you want to spend a little more money and have the perfect soil to start with, you use 1 part vermiculite to 1 part peat moss to 1 part compost (use different types of compost to make it). You put each of those out onto a tarp, mix it up and then slide the end of the tarp over the raised bed and rake into your box. It costs more, but it also gives the perfect soil the first year which increases your produce yield. We did this, and we had the equivalent of 2 raised beds, and we had fresh salad every day for the spring and summer, tons of herbs, carrots that were huge, onions, garlic, and tons and tons of produce out of an 8×8 area. While the garden was coming in, I only had to buy fruit for my family of 5 at the time for spring, summer, and into fall.

Wow, this looks pretty easy! Now, once you’ve got the boxes ready, how do you know how many vegetables will fit in it? Do you have any examples of what will fit in a raised bed that size? Thanks for your helpful videos!
I am hoping to get a post up soon about how to use a grid method to plant soon. However, if there are specific vegetables that you want, I listed the how much distance to put between each plant in my how to grow series. So, basically it depends on which plants you want to grow. Plants can grow closer together in a raised bed. If you want to plant squash, watermelon, or another big plant, make sure to plant it into a corner, and train it to go out of the box. If you want plants that grow up, such as peas or green beans, you can use a lattice on the side edge and have your plants grow up. Hope that helps some! Here is a link to the gardening posts.

You can put your oven rack on the highest level and put the ramekins right in the middle. Put the setting to a little less than broiling, and chk the brulee in 30 second intervals. However, this risks warming up the brulee really quick
