I am so excited to talk to you guys about gardening. This is such a great way to save money, and have fresh, organic produce. There is nothing as delicious as a meal cooked that you just picked a few hours before. Trust me. YUMMY!! I am going to TRY and post about several seeds that should be started indoors where I live now. Specifically plants that I will be planting. I can’t cover all of the plants out there, but I do want to go over the plants that we are going to be growing. First, I want to talk about how to grow cauliflower.
How To Plant Cauliflower:
1. Start your cauliflower seeds indoors 1-2 months before the last frost. In our area of NC, this is April 30th.
2. When the plants are about 6 inches tall, the weather has warmed up & the threat of frost is over, plant them in your garden.
3. When you plant the cauliflower plants, make sure that you do not cover the bottom leaves, but you do want to come close to the bottom leaves with your dirt.
4. When you are planting cauliflower in the fall, you can plant the seeds directly in the ground. Plant 3-4 seeds together (they won’t all germinate), and 18-24 inches apart.
5. When the fall cauliflower seeds sprout, you can thin any extra seedlings by snipping the stalk close to the ground. You don’t want to pull it out because it could disrupt the roots of the cauliflower plant that you are keeping.
6. We don’t tie up our cauliflower or worry if it looks perfect. Some people as the heads of cauliflower are growing will tie them together, but it doesn’t seem woth it to me.
7. You want to harvest the cauliflower once the heads are full. Make sure to try and harvest them before the different sections of cauliflower begin to separate.
8. Cauliflower does not like excessive heat, and they need to be kept moist.
What Type of Cauliflower We Plant:
The two types of cauliflower that we are growing are: Snowball (white cauliflower) and Purple of Sicily (purple cauliflower)
To be honest, the purple cauliflower seems harder to germinate, but it produces a beautiful, healthy plant. So, when you are planting your seeds, I would suggest overestimating the amount of seeds to plant for the Purple of Sicily cauliflower, so that you get the number of plants that you want.
Where To Plant Your Cauliflower:
Cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage are all in the brassica family of plants. This means that if you plant them in the same place year after year, they can get Clubroot disease. So, each year make sure that you plant them in different locations where a brassica plant has not been planted in the past 4 years.
Companion Plants for Cauliflower:
Some plants grow well together, or help keep off bugs that might want to eat other plants etc. While you do not have to do this, it may help you as you try to garden organically.
Nasturtium is a good companion plant for cauliflower. These help to defer different garden bugs that can hurt your plants. They also help to attract good bugs that eat your bad bugs. (-:

Amanda – That would actually be my last choice because I try not to get genetically modified seeds. I am excited about the garden post too, I am from NC and am planning on having my own garden this year, coming from a family of farmers I feel like I should know all this but it helps to have a refresher.
I am loving your gardening series too! I have had a garden for the last 3 years but I still have a lot to learn! Last year was not as successful so I think we need to bring in more top soil this year.
Renae – If you have trees around, in the fall you can also crunch up leaves into your soil, and it will really enrich with nutrients as well. You might want to try that next year. It is an easy way to increase the quality of your soil. Also, try rotating your crops if you didn’t already. Sometimes though with small gardens, you do need to get more soil.
