How To Grow Spinach

How To Grow Spinach

Spinach can be grown in several seasons, so it is important to look at the variety that you are planting. The best spinach, and easiest to harvest in my opinion is the early spring spinach that you plant in cool weather. The leaves are bigger and it grows more quickly. You can harvest spinach the same way you harvest lettuce and it will keep producing. Just cut it once there are 4-5 leaves, and it will keep producing for several cuttings. You can also just let the plant grow and cut down the entire plant at one time. We tend to do both. Most of the harvest we do at the same time. We pull up the entire plant, cut off the roots, and go put it in the washing machine and let it run through a washing cycle and it comes out clean.

Spinach used to be my least favorite plant to harvest because it takes FOREVER to wash all the leaves. However, the washing machine method works so well and is so easy, I no longer hate it.

Obviously don’t use soap in our washer just let the water rinse your leaves.

There is also summer spinach. This spinach has really little leaves and requires a lot of effort to harvest since the leaves are so small. If you love spinach, this plant might be worth it for you. I choose not to grow it because I hated the harvesting and washing of all the tiny leaves. Now that I found the washer method, I might try it again, but probably not this year.

Spinach seeds are little. We just scatter the seeds on the ground in rows. When the spinach comes up, we thin the plants to 2-3 inches apart. Remember, when you are thinning plants, don’t pull them up out of the ground. This will disturb the roots of the plants that you want to keep. Instead, pinch off the plant near the soil.
