How To Grow Lettuce
I LOVE fresh lettuce. It is so good!! We grow leaf lettuces. Our favorite green variety is buttercrunch. It is a light green, sweet lettuce. We also grow a salad mixture which is similar to the spring mixes that you will find in the grocery stores.
Lettuce is a cool weather plant and can be planted when you plant your peas or soon after. Lettuce tastes best in cool weather. When the weather turns hot, the lettuce tends to get bitter. We plant all of our lettuces together about 6-12 inches apart.
When you harvest lettuce, don’t pull up the entire plant. Bring your scissors outside with you and cut the leaves a couple of inches above the soil. It is really important to harvest lettuce this way and it will keep producing. You don’t want to pull leaves off your plant because that will cause your lettuce to bolt. Lettuce that bolts is bitter like lettuce in hot weather is. We have salads daily when the lettuce is coming in, and just rotate which lettuce plants we cut. My 3 year old actually loves to eat the lettuce plain.
We plant our lettuce every few days so that it is not all ready at the same time as well.
Many people have asked me about Romaine. We have grown that in the past, but it is not our favorite variety. It doesn’t produce as well. The leaves are tighter, and it is not as sweet as other varieties. The spring mix, red leaf lettuce, and buttercrunch grow really well, and quickly. Plus their flavor is incredible.
If you do grow head lettuce. You don’t have to wait for the head to be the size you will find in the grocery store. In fact if you grow vegetables organically your head probably won’t be as large, especially if you are using non genetically modified seeds.

Im hardly an avid gardner like you, but I must say, I planted romaine year before last and it was BEAUTIFUL!! I was amazed that is grew so fast, so well and really as big as in the store, and it was SO pretty. I had no idea. THere’s only 2 of us and we couldn’t keep up with eating it.
