Retell Familiar Stories
This is called narrating by Charlotte Mason.
- Read a familiar book.
- Ask the child to tell you what the book said. Summary.
- Later….read the same book. Ask the child what happens on each page before you turn the page.
- Later….have the child tell you what each page says as he/she becomes more familiar with the page. It is fine if they tell you what the pictures “say.”
- Begin suggesting other main events in each book until the child can give you a simple retelling of familiar stories.
- Use living books such as “Ping” and “Peter Rabbit” for a longer story and more details.
- Ask questions about the story you have read to help them remember details. Never read a book without asking one comprehension question.
- As a child is older, ask him/her to draw pictures about the story.
- Begin work on sequencing. What happened first in this story? What happens next? What was the last thing the character did in the book?
