How To Plant Peppers
We grow numerous types of peppers. Cayenne peppers, thai cili peppers, bell peppers, jalapenos and more. If you are growing multiple varities, the most important thing is to make sure that the plants are pretty far apart. They will cross pollinate, and you don’t want to bite into a bell pepper and realize that it crossed with a cayenne pepper. (-:
Out of all of the plants that I grow, I personally find bell peppers the most challenging. They are also one of my favorite veggies, so I keep growing them year after year. My bell peppers are usually smaller than what you would find in a store. However, they taste so much better and fresher.
There are two types of bell peppers that I have found I have the most success with: California Wonders (green bell peppers) and Purple Bell Peppers. I have found that I purple bell peppers give me the highest yield. They are also really sweet and similar to an orange bell pepper in taste in my opinion.
Bell peppers like slightly acidic soil. Also, they produce when the weather is hot.
I read a tip that I am planning on trying this year. I have heard that bell pepper plants like magnesium. Apparently, that is found in Epsom salt, and you can mix a little Epsom salt in a spray bottle of water and spray the plant. Obviously too much salt would be bad for the palnt, but I am going to give this a try.
Pick bell peppers when they are firm and before they get at all wrinkled. Just twist the pepper and it will pop off the plant when you are ready to harvest.
I have also heard that peppers grow better in poor soil, not a lot of fertilizer. This is from growers, who grow lots of peppers to sell.

I love to grow peppers. But I never had my peppers get very big either. Then last year my dad bought my bags of Composted Chicken Manure. He told me to mix a scope of ccm in with the planting hole dirt. I had the biggest plants and whopping big peppers. Just make sure the compost is 2-3 yrs old. Your better off getting it from a greenhouse than Lowes or Walmart. Just be careful not to add too much; it burns the plants sometimes.

I am actually trying that this year. We have chickens, and have been turning their manure into compost for a couple of years. We have been putting it throughout the garden, but I will have to concentrate a little more on the peppers. Thanks so much for the tip!! Rene
