How to Plant Carrots
Carrots have a long growing season. I plant them just about all year long. You can start planting them in very early spring through October. I actually even planted some in November. I think that the easiest type to grow are half longs. These are much shorter and smaller carrots than the traditional carrots you will find in the store. They grow to be 4-5 inches long and are thinner. They are so sweet and not woody.
Carrots are root vegetables. They need really loose soil. They like sandy soil. However, I don’t have sandy soil, but they still grow well. You just have to have really loose soil for the carrots to grow. Carrots actually used to be grown in the front beds of houses in America. Carrot greens are dark green and feathery and they used to be considered very pretty and you were expected to have them in your front flower beds. Even though they are pretty my soil isn’t loose enough to grow mine in my front bed, so they grow in my raised beds.
Carrot seeds are really small. It is pretty impossible to not plant them too close together. I just sprinkle the carrot seeds on top of the soil, and then loosely cover it with soil. Too many carrots come up then and must be thinned. I thin them by pinching off the tops of the smaller plants once they start coming up.
Carrots love tomatoes, so the carrots that you plant when you have tomatoes coming up can be planted around those tomatoes.
