Controlling Bugs In Your Garden

Combating Insects in Your Garden

We typically go on bug patrol early in the morning and squash the bugs or knock them into a cup of water then feed them to the chicken. However, there are also some things that you can use on plants that aren’t full of chemicals.

Corn: When you see the silks turn brown, put ½ medicine dropper of mineral oil to kill the corn earworms.

Flea Beetles: You can make garlic and hot pepper sprays. Just cut open and boil hot peppers and garlic in water and then spray your plants with the spray. Note: When you are spraying with these, wear a mask and make sure that it is not windy. You don’t want to be sprayed. Also, you won’t want to spray on your veggies right before you harvest them.

Slugs – you can break up egg shells around the plant and it inhibits the slugs from getting to the plants.

When you are picking your veggies also look for clumps of eggs. You can usually just pick off that leaf and feed it to chickens if it is large eggs. If they are smaller eggs, you can just crush them between the leaf.
