Container Gardening

Container Gardening

Container gardening is another great way to garden. It is easy, quick, and requires little time. This is a wonderful method of gardening for people that have little time, little space and little sun.

Containers can easily be moved around, so that they get the maximum amount of sun they can get. We have many areas in our yard that are shady, and I move my container plants each afternoon so they can get both the morning and afternoon sun.

There should be very few weeds if any since containers are off of the ground. This makes it harder to spray seeds into them as you mow your lawn, so it is a very low maintenance way to garden.

If you don’t have room for containers, but have sunny windows, you could even plant a few herbs in a window container. Plus, for those of you with no land, you can even container gardening inside.

I use leftover tree containers for my container gardening outside. I already have the containers from when I bought my fruit and nut trees, and I plant in these. If you live in a very sunny area though, you will want to be careful about using darker colored containers since they can get too hot. You can paint your container a lighter color or purchase lighter colored containers. I don’t have to worry about that at my house because there is so much shade. Tomato plants are what I typically plant in containers because they need so much sunlight. Since I live in a shady area, I like to be able to move my plants in the afternoon so that they can get more sunlight.

Two Tips for Container Gardening

There are two things to keep in mind when using container gardening.

First, the water will evaporate quickly, so you will need to check your containers daily to make sure that your plants are moist enough. Since there is less soil and the water drains out easily, these plants will need more water than plants in the ground.

Second, you will have to use fertilizer. For all other methods of gardening, I strongly discourage the use of fertilizers because you can naturally build up your soil with worms and compost which is a healthy way to provide nutrients to your plants. However, with a container garden, too many nutrients wash away when you water your plants. Really, you have to use fertilizer. I am not a fertilizer expert, since I rarely use any, but I do try to find organic or natural fertilizers when I shop. I usually will include a small amount of fertilizer every 7th watering. Over fertilizing can burn a plant, so you will want to use caution and follow directions when applying fertilizer.

Check out the comment that Amanda left below about how to fertilize using organic compost. I think that is such a great idea! I will definitely be trying her tip out!

Feeding tip (I’ve done container gardening the past 4 or 5 years so I have lots of container tops! Our soil is terrible here to start so our ground garden totally failed my first year. We worked to build up oil soil and are doing part in ground and part container this year). For feeding naturally in containers, I use compost tea. Fill a large sock with good, organic compost. Tie sock off at the top, sit it in a bucket of water a day or two in the sun, covered. Then, use the liquid, water it down some, and pour it around the plants. I try to do this about every week or so. They say for the best quality compost tea to use an oxygenator like a fish tank bubble maker, but I’ve done ok so far without this.
