Subjects & Typical Day For My Homeschooled 7th Grader

This is my next post in my homeschooling series. If you missed my earlier posts, you can find our why we homeschool here and how to start homeschooling here.

What Does A Typical Homeschool Day Look Like For My 7th Grader

Today’s homeschooling topic is what a typical homeschool day looks like for us. This is another common question that I get asked. I can tell you guys what most days look like, but the great thing about homeschooling is that you can be flexible. When my grandmother needs to be cared for, we can pick up and go. When my husband travels, we can go with him and bring our work. On Fridays we like to go on field trips. During gardening season, we will spend hours harvesting and can mainly take off the month of July for the harvest. So, our typical days can vary.

My disclaimer: A typical day is different for everyone. Don’t think that I have all the answers, or that what I do is perfect. What we do works for our family.

We LOVE to homeschool, and my two oldest children are very self motivated. My third daughter does not seem to be quite as motivated, but she is young so I will have to see how she turns out.  However, she appears to be a hands-on learner, and has a much shorter attention span than my older two did at her age.  I love homeschooling because I can cater to each of my kid’s strengths.

I have added subjects over the years, and I do more subjects than are actually required because we enjoy it, so don’t let my list overwhelm you, nor do I want you to think that you should go by this list. I am actually planning quite a few changes in our curriculum for next year that I am quite excited about!! I will get to those in one of my upcoming posts.

What Subjects My 7th Grader Covers:

This year my eldest is in 7th grade. She is studying Pre-Algebra, Physical Science, Economics, History, Spelling, Citizenship, Spanish, Literature, Writing, Bible, Logic, Typing, Grammar, reading-writing workshop and geography.

She can’t complete all of her subjects each day, so we do our core subjects daily. These include history, English, spelling, Bible study, math and science. Spanish and reading writing workshop are three days a week and typing and grammar are two days a week. Her other electives are once a week.

Typical Homeschool Schedule For My 7th Grader:

My eldest daughter is an early bird. She likes to get up, and get as much work done as possible before her brother and sisters wake up. She starts her homeschooling between 6 and 6:30 am each day. She works on the subjects that require the most concentration while it is easy for her to concentrate. She does math and science early in the morning. Once everyone is up, we will do Bible study together as a family. She then continues to work on her homeschooling throughout the morning and usually into naptime.

Typically she is able to finish her math, science, and one other subject by 8:30 each morning. Her science curriculum does include labs. If it is a neat lab that her siblings can learn from, we will wait to complete the labs until they are awake and can watch.

I really want my children to be able to learn on their own. So, I always have her review her science text before I go over it with her. Each day, I do go through the text and ask her questions to make sure that she understands it. This is also when we will do additional enrichment activities to learn even more about what she is studying. She does great with math on her own, and I just check her work and make sure that she understands any problems that she missed.

Since she is twelve, I do not have to spend all of my time schooling her. She is able to read and follow directions on her own. Much of her learning can be self taught. However, I also don’t just let her work completely on her own. I am available for questions, and check on her throughout the day.  After lunch we go over what she has completed so far, and what she has left to complete.

Typically we try to keep the subjects that we will be working on together to naptime. However, if the younger kids are all occupied, we will go ahead and work together on those subjects during the morning. This is something that each family with young kids and homeschooling children has to figure out on their own.

My favorite part of the day with her is our teacher conference each night after the younger kids go to bed. I finish checking any work that I was not able to check during the day. We discuss everything that she learned that day.

Our teacher conference is also when we go over the next day’s work and discuss which subjects she will need my help with the next day.

Most days I spend about two hours one on one with her homeschooling. However, there are some days that she needs less time, and others that she needs a lot more of my time.

I will discuss my typical day with my younger children in a later post.

So those of you that homeschool . . . what does your typical day look like?
