Science Curriculum For Middle and High School

I am continuing my homeschool series. Earlier I posted about Why I HomeschoolHow To Start Homeschooling, my 7th graders typical day, my four year olds day, and what we use to homeschool elementary school science.

Today, I am going to discuss what middle and high school science curriculum we use and why.

Today, I will be talking about the science curriculum that we use for middle and high school.

We continue to use apologia science for middle and high school. Dr. Jay Wile has written some amazing science books for students this age. My daughter has absolutely loved this series, and so have I.

The books are written from a biblical perspective, which is very important to my family.

There are experiments throughout each chapter. These experiments really help to cement the concepts that are being taught.

My daughter did one section each day during middle school. At the end of most sections there are on your own questions. These are questions that she answers and is able to check on her own to make sure that she understands the concept. I have her check the answers herself, but I still look over these answers each night just to make sure that I know that she has understood the concept.

At the end of each chapter is a study guide. This study guide is a great review of what they should have learned from that chapter. If they learn the information on the study guide, they will do well on their test.

There is a code at the front of these books that allows students to access an online website with links to further information about what they are studying. My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed getting to learn in more detail about what she is interested in through this site.

I do have my daughter write up a science report for every lab that she completes. This is definitely her least favorite part of science, but since the experiments are her favorite, I don’t hear too many complaints.

I think that it is important to know how to write up a lab report and putting your conclusions in writing is a good way to ensure that you understand the concepts that the experiment was teaching.

I listened to Dr. Jay Wile speak at a homeschool convention, and he was delightful to listen to! He taught at a university before becoming a homeschooling parent himself. His books are written so that your child will be ready for college after using his texts.

There are quite a few books that you can use, and since my daughter enjoys science so much, she is planning on doing science class and science electives in the same year in high school to ensure that she can complete some of the alternative courses such as marine biology.

Here is a list of the courses offered:

  • General Science
  • Physical Science
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Advanced Biology
  • Marine Biology
  • Advanced Chemistry
  • Advanced Physics
