I am continuing my homeschool series. Math U See Review
Today I am going to talk about the math curriculum that we use.
For math curriculum, we use Math U See. We have used other curriculums in the past that we were not happy with. My daughter hated math and would cry through it. Out of all of my curriculum searches and trials, Math U See is by far the find that we are the most excited about!
My daughter went from missing half of the problems and hating math to enjoying her math and typically only missing at most 2 problems.
Math U See relies on manipulatives and explains why and how to work a math problem. Children are able to literally see what how a math problem works, and they also are able to understand the reason that you solve the problem that way.
Another great feature about Math U See is that there are 6 sections in each lesson. A, B, and C cover the new topic they are learning. D, E and F are a review. Some books also include H for honors classes.
Our rule is that if you miss two or less problems on A, then you don’t have to do B and C because you have learned the material. This really encourages my daughter to pay attention and do well on each lesson so that she does not have to do B and C.
I have read quite a few reviews about math curriculum. The consensus is that if you keep your kids in Math U See they will do quite well in math. However, some reviews think that the problems are not challenging enough.
Just in case the latter reviews are correct, next year we will start assigning problems from the SAT review book to complete as well. This way she is still able to learn her math from Math U See, but she is getting similar questions to the SAT for her review.
I really can not speak highly enough of Math U See! Math was the one part of homeschooling that we did not enjoy until we found this curriculum.
How To Save Money With Math U See:
1. Try to buy the manipulatives used. I have been able to find these at used book sales.
2. Try to buy the text books used. I am a member of local homeschool forums that advertise books and I go to used book sales.
3. Watch for sales.
4. Trade books with your friends or family if you have children of similar ages.

I’ve used Math U See for my almost 9 year old and love how one area of math builds on a future lesson. For example: skip counting by 5 will help them learn how to tell time so much faster because they have already learned to count by 5 for the minutes :)
I’ve also noticed that when you go to re-sell your materials on E-bay, the selling price is near the original cost of the product. Especially if the material is in excellent condition :)
Esther, I am so thankful that I found Math U See. It has been a lifesaver for our homeschool. Math was the one subject that we both hated doing before finding it. The example you gave above is another reason it is a great program! (-: Hope that you and the family are doing well!
