Building a cold frame can be a great way to improve your organic garden. We decided to build cold frames this year for our early spring crops. A cold frame can be built many different ways, but the main thing is that the cold frame allows the plants to stay warmer.
Advantages of a Cold Frame:
We did a little experiment to see how much of a difference our cold frames would make. We planted 2 rows of broccoli side by side. One row was planted in a cold frame, and the other was planed in a traditional row. Our plants in the cold frame grew to about 3 times the size of the other plants, and produced much more broccoli for a longer period of time.
How We Made Our Cold Frame:
We found some old windows that someone gave us for free, and we bought some straw. We piled the straw around the row and placed the windows on top of the straw. On days that were warm, we would open the windows and allow air to flow through more freely so that they would not overheat, and on days that were cool, we left the windows shut.
Since our broccoli plants grew so tall, and we wanted to be able to use the cold frame for a longer period of time, the straw was high enough to allow the plants to grow unimpeded.
Once the days started being warm, we just removed the windows, and used the straw to mulch around our tomato and pepper plants.
Other ways to build a cold frame:
There are many other ways that you could build a cold frame. You could use wood, bricks or anything else to form a frame around your plants. You could then cover this material in glass or plastic that you have on hand. I have used old dressers, bookcases and whatever I had on hand in the past, and it has worked great! You don’t have to spend a fortune to make a cold frame, but it really can improve your garden!
