Our First Homeschool Week This Year

Our homeschool year has started!! Yay!!

I am so excited because it is time for us to start our homeschool year again! I have a great year planned out, and I can’t wait to get started!!

Here is the curriculum that we will be using this year:

Our 8th grader:

Tapestry of Grace Year 1 (This covers literature, Bible, history writing, geography, government, vocabulary and philosophy.) Here is my review of Tapestry of Grace.

Mavis Beacon typing Here is my review of Mavis Beacon Typing.

Apologia Science Biology (I actually taught Biology in high school before my other jobs, and I LOVE Biology, so I am SO excited about this!!) She is so excited about the microscope and slide experiments. Here is my review of Apologia Science for middle and high school.

Math U See Algebra 1  Here is my review for Math U See.

Rosetta Stone Spanish  Here is my review for Rosetta Stone.

The Critical Thinking Company Word Roots, Building Thinking Skills, Reading Detective, Daily Mind Builders: Language Arts & Editor in Chief

Spelling (My daughter is so right brained, that I am just going to pick out the words that she misspells and we are going to make colorful, fun picture cards for the words and use them to help her memorize words that she misses.)

SAT prep for additional vocabulary and math work

She is also reading Nourishing Traditions for health.

Our 4 year old:

I am starting our four year old in Kindergarten this year. I know that that is early, but she loves to learn and just begs, so if it takes us two years to get through Kindergarten, that is fine. However, I doubt that it will because she would spend the entire day in school if she could.

Tapestry of Grace Year 1 (I am modifying this curriculum quite a bit since we can’t afford to get the books that they recommend. I will be supplementing with books from the library and she will be doing crafts with her older sister.) This is just for fun. My priority for her is to learn to read, write and do math.

Starfall for reading

Curriculum that I wrote

Apologia science Astronomy (We have already started this, but will continue working thorugh the book. We are doing this with our cousins as well once a week.) There are Notebooking Journals and Junior Notebooking Journal that are fun to do with these books. Here is my review of Apologia science for elementary school.

My 2 Year Old

My third child is not like my first two. She is not interested in worksheets or sitting and learning. She loves to play with legos and build things. So, at this age, there is no way that I will be forcing her to homeschool.

We will read together for 15 minutes a day, and more if she will sit still long enough.

She likes to have boxes like her older sisters, so she has educational toys and puzzles in boxes that I pull off the shelf for her when she asks.

She also is in the room with us while I teach my four year old. It is absolutely amazing what she has picked up from being in the room with her, and me spending no one on one time with her! She knows her entire alphabet. She can count to 12. She knows her colors. She obviously is able to learn and observe while playing, and I see no reason to change that at this point.

She will be turning three during this school year, and I plan on helping her try to form letters and numbers with play dough, blocks, legos etc as she requests, but I will not be pushing her.

I do not think that I will be starting her in Kindergarten until she is 5 or 6. She is not unintelligent compared to my other kids, but has very different learning styles, and I want to cater to her needs in her education.

My baby:

Baby Rock will be turning one in September! I can’t believe it!! He actually loves to listen to stories. My four year old will sit and let me read to her for hours, and he climbs up in my lap to listen as well for the majority of the time.

So, I will be reading to him, talking to him, singing to him and introducing him to new sights and sounds.

I will use the one year old curriculum that I talked about in this post, as well as the curriculum that I have written for him.

I think that he will be more like our second born and love to school, but we will have to see. If he is, I will go ahead and get him started early.

Have you guys started your homeschool year yet? How is it going so far? What are you using this year? I would love to hear details!! I figure homeschool parents can always support and learn from each other!
