Homemade Apple Sauce Recipe

I can applesauce each year for my kids. They love it! I love to eat the applesauce warm, so my favorite way to eat it is right after it cooks. My kids love it anyway that they can get it. This is the one thing that I never seem to be able to can enough of. You can cook these down in a big stock pot or in a crock pot. If you are cooking it in a stock pot, you will need to stir more frequently.

This is a delicious, easy apple sauce recipe that is sure to please!
Ingredients
  • 12 cups of apples, peeled, cored and pureed in a food processor, or finely chopped
  • 1/-2 to 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon or 1/2 cup cinnamon candies or both
  • 3 Tablespoons lemon juice
Instructions
  1. Peel, core and slice the apples. I use a corer, peeler, slicer. I place the apples in a bowl and sprinkle them with the lemon juice.
  2. Puree the apples to desired consistency. I like mine chunky, so I only pulse the apples a few times in the food processor.
  3. Place the apples which are pureed and have been sprinkled with lemon juice to the stock pot or crockpot.
  4. Add the sugar, cinnamon or cinnamon candies, and stir. If your apples are really sweet, you will not need much sugar at all, for tarter apples, you can add more sugar.
  5. You will want to put a lid on the crockpot and stock pot.
  6. In the stock pot method, you will want to stir every few minutes to ensure that the apples are not burning. Usually you only have to cook this for about 30 minutes.
  7. In the crockpot, I usually let mine cook for a couple of hours.
  8. Since I have four children, I can my apple sauce in quart jars.
  9. If you are canning your applesauce, place it into sterilized jars. The pint jars will process for 15 minutes in a boiling water bath, and the quart jars will process for 20 minutes in a boiling water bath. If you live at a high altitude, you will need to add 5 minutes per 1,000 feet to your processing times.
  10. I usually will make 10 times this amount and use both methods. I will can the apple sauce in the stock pot first, then the apple sauce in the crock pot.

What a timely post. I canned for the first time this year and have a bag of apples on my counter that I need to do something with before they go bad. Applesauce, which my daughter eats daily, seems like the perfect solution. Thanks for sharing.
