The Imagination Station Series – Giveaway

I was really excited to have the opportunity to review a series of books, The Imagination Station Series. Also, one of you will have an opportunity to win a copy of the series as well! (details below)

How many of you have listened to Adventures in Odyssey? Well, we love that audio series in our family! So, when I found out that, Paul McCusker, who has written over 300 Adventures in Odyessey was the creative director, I could not wait to read them!

The books are geared towards kids ages 7 and up. I read them aloud to my 4 year old, and she really enjoyed them. Actually, she loved them so much that one of them was read in one sitting. We just sat and read all morning. It was fun! She just kept begging me to go on, and I could not resist.

I think that history is so important for kids to learn, and that is one of the reasons that I love these books! Using the virtual reality device, the Imagination Station invented by Mr. Whittaker, 2 children, Beth and Patrick, are able to travel back in time.

In Book 1, Voyage With the Vikings, the 2 kids travel back and meet the Vikings. Then, they are able to travel on a boat with them as well. The book is full of excitement as the older viking leader does not like them, but the younger one defends them.

In book 2, Attack at the Arena, Beth and Patrick get to travel back to ancient Rome. We enjoyed doing the family devotional that went along with the book, that we found here. This was perfect timing since my eldest daughter is getting ready to study Rome this week.

Book 3, Peril in the Palace, takes you back to ancient China! Kids will learn about the Mongols from the 13th century. It is an exciting book as the kids have many adventures including looking for the golden tablet of Kublai Khan. Huge eagles will sweep people away. It is an exciting read, that my daughter insisted we finish in one sitting.

Book 4, Revenge of the Red Knight, has Patrick and Beth in England in the middle of a fight between two knights. This book has castles, jousting, kings and excitement. It teaches kids values, history and is entertaining.

Book 5, Showdown with the Shepherd, is a book that takes Beth and Patrick back in time to when David was a shepherd boy. The kids have an exciting start as they are attacked by a bear. However, David rescues them in time. Then the kids accompany him to the camp where his brothers are.

Reading the book allows you to think about the fear that the Israelites must have faced as they were facing the Philistines. There is a villan in the book (in addition to Goliath) who is trying to mess with history. Beth and Patrick race to stop him. David does end up knocking down and killing Goliath, and the kids are able to watch this Bible story unfold.

It is a different way to tell the Bible story since you are seeing it from their perspective. The Bible story is still portrayed accurately (other than the kids and the villan coming back on the Imagination Station.) We really enjoyed the book!

Provided information: In Showdown with the Shepherd, Patrick and Beth go to the Holy Land in the tenth century BC. Their goal is to get back the ring Hugh stole and return him to 1450s England where he belongs. But troubles await them as soon as they step out of the Imagination Station. First they meet an angry bear and later an angry giant. Set against the backdrop of the David and Goliath story, the cousins learn that having a giant faith is more important than having a giant on your side.

In book 6, Problems in Plymouth, kids get to read about the first Thanksgiving. The kids have a run in with Indians, and Hugh, the villan from the other books is back trying to stir up trouble, and ruin the first Thanksgiving. This book is a fun introduction into early American history, and is full of character trait examples that we can teach our kids from.

Provided information: Patrick and Beth’s next adventure leads them to Plymouth Plantation in 1621. There they meet William Bradford, Miles Standish, and Squanto who are trying to establish peace between the Pilgrims and the Indians. Things are anything but peaceful, however, when a musket is stolen and the Pilgrims conclude the Indians are planning war. Only Patrick and Beth know who the real thief is—the traitor Hugh—and it’s up to the cousins to find him and stop him from causing trouble. When the cousins hear a gunshot during the first Thanksgiving feast, their worst fears are realized.

Our family really has loved this series so far. I love that the books teach so much about history. The books are full of excitement, and just the right amount of suspense. The books do keep you on the edge of your seat, and you want to know what is going to happen, but the suspense is not too much for younger kids. I really feel that the books help to teach character traits that I am trying to instill in my children. At less than $5 a book, these books would make a great addition to kid’s libraries.

Also, books 7 and 8 will soon be released! My kids are SO excited about that! Above is a preview of one of those covers!
